Member Tags and Segmentation
Member tags are one of the most powerful organizational tools in ServeLeague. They let you label and group your members however makes sense for your club, whether by skill level, age group, membership tier, or any other category you choose. Once tagged, you can filter your member directory, target email communications to specific groups, and even control which members can access certain leagues.
This tutorial walks you through creating tags, assigning them to members (individually and in bulk), and putting them to work across your club.
Step 1: Go to Tag Management
From your club's admin sidebar, go to People → Tags. This is the central hub for managing all your club's tags. You'll see a grid of tag cards, each showing the tag name, its color, and how many members are currently assigned.
If this is your first time here, the page will show an empty state prompting you to create your first tag.

[!TIP] Tags are a club-level feature gated behind the Membership plan. If you don't see the Tags option in your sidebar, check that your club's subscription includes membership management.
Step 2: Create Your First Tags
Click the Create Tag button in the top-right corner. A form appears with two fields:
- Tag Name: a descriptive label like "Advanced", "Junior", "Social Member", or "Monday Group"
- Color: pick from eight preset colors (blue, red, green, amber, purple, pink, cyan, orange) to visually distinguish your tags at a glance
Click Create to save the tag. It appears immediately in the tag grid with a member count of zero.
Repeat this for each tag you want. Here are some common tagging schemes clubs use:
| Scheme | Example Tags |
|---|---|
| Skill level | Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Elite |
| Age group | Junior, Senior, Veteran |
| Membership tier | Full Member, Social Member, Trial |
| Play group | Monday Night, Thursday Social, Weekend Warriors |
| Competition | League Player, Tournament Squad, Representative |

[!TIP] Choose distinct colors for tags you'll frequently see together. For example, use warm colors (red, orange, amber) for skill levels and cool colors (blue, cyan, purple) for groups. It makes scanning your directory much faster.
Step 3: Assign Tags to Individual Members
There are two ways to tag a member. The most direct is from the Member Detail page.
Go to People → Members, then click on any member's name. Scroll to the Tags section on their profile. You'll see:
- Assigned Tags: colored badges for every tag currently on this member, each with a remove button
- Available Tags: a list of unassigned tags you can add with a single click
Click any available tag to assign it immediately. To remove a tag, click the × button on the assigned tag badge and confirm the removal.
You can also create a new tag and assign it in one step. Click the + New Tag button below the available tags, enter a name, pick a color, and click Create & Assign. The tag is created club-wide and immediately assigned to this member.

Step 4: Bulk-Tag Members from the Directory
When you need to tag many members at once (say, marking everyone who attended a trial session as "Trial Member") the member directory's bulk actions are the fastest approach. If you're working with a large roster, you might also want to import players in bulk and pre-assign tags during the import.
- Go to People → Members to open the member directory
- Use the checkboxes to select the members you want to tag (you can select across pages)
- Click the Assign Tag button that appears in the bulk action bar
- A list shows all your club's tags. Click the one you want
All selected members receive the tag instantly. The tag's member count updates to reflect the change.

[!NOTE] Bulk assignment adds a tag. It never removes existing tags. If a member already has the tag, the duplicate is silently ignored.
Step 5: Manage Tag Membership
Back on the Tags page, each tag card has a Members button. Click it to open a window listing every member currently assigned to that tag.
From this view you can:
- Review who has the tag at a glance
- Remove individual members by clicking the remove button next to their name
This is useful for periodic cleanup. For example, promoting members from "Beginner" to "Intermediate" at the end of a season by removing them from one tag and adding them to another.
Step 6: Use Tags to Target Email Communications
Tags become especially powerful when combined with ServeLeague's email communication tools. When composing an email from Communications → Compose, you can filter recipients by tag:
- Set the Filter by list to By Tag
- A list of your club's tags appears with checkboxes and color indicators
- Select one or more tags to narrow the recipient list
- The preview updates in real time showing how many members match
This lets you send targeted messages: a training schedule to "Advanced" members, a social event invitation to "Social Member" tags, or a fee reminder to a specific membership tier.

[!TIP] When you select multiple tags, the recipient list includes members who have any of the selected tags (union, not intersection). A member tagged as both "Advanced" and "Monday Group" only receives the email once.
Step 7: Control League Access with Tags
Tags also integrate with league access control. When creating or editing a league, the Access Control section lets you grant access by tag, meaning only members with specific tags can view or register for the league.
For example, you might:
- Restrict an "Elite League" to members tagged "Advanced" or "Elite"
- Limit a junior competition to the "Junior" tag
- Open a social league to "Social Member" and "Full Member" tags
In the access control panel, you'll see your tags listed with checkboxes. Check the tags whose members should have access. Members without any of the checked tags won't see the league.

[!NOTE] If you check "All Members", tag-based restrictions are bypassed and every club member can access the league.
Editing and Deleting Tags
You can rename a tag or change its color at any time by clicking Edit on any tag card. The tag's slug updates automatically and all existing assignments are preserved.
To delete a tag, click Delete on the tag card and confirm. Deleting a tag permanently removes it and all its member assignments. Members themselves are unaffected, only the tag association is removed. This action cannot be undone, so use it with care.

Summary
Member tags give you flexible, visual segmentation for your entire club roster. Here's what you've learned:
- Create tags with meaningful names and distinct colors from the Tags page
- Assign tags to individuals from their member profile, or in bulk from the member directory
- Review and manage tag membership from the tag detail window
- Target emails to specific tagged groups using communication filters
- Control league access by restricting registration to members with certain tags
Start with two or three skill-level tags. Even that immediately improves how you manage leagues and communicate with members.
